It’s a doll that is poorly programmed and misunderstands how to handle the emotions of those around him. It doesn’t have motives of its own that make it go out of its way to kill anyone. Herein lies one of the many factors that make Child’s Play so terrible. It’s only when Andy expresses annoyance with his cat and his mom’s boyfriend – after watching and laughing along to a showing of Texas Chainsaw Massacre – that Chucky interprets the logical move is to kill both of them. First and foremost, Chucky is nothing short of a friend to Andy. It can call a rideshare, control household appliances and even helps with household basic chores. In this iteration, Chucky is not unlike Alexa or any other smart home device. Andy tries to name the doll Han Solo but it glitches, calls itself Chucky (ha), and it’s downhill from there. Karen manages to snag a returned Buddi doll to cheer up Andy. Their recent move and Andy’s disdain for his mom’s new boyfriend Shane (Daniel Lewis) have Andy feeling down. We’re introduced to Karen (Aubrey Plaza) a disinterested retail worker who recently moved to a rough part of town with her son Andy (Gabriel Bateman). Oh, and it’s a hideous, creepy doll that nobody would actually ever buy.
He programs a Good Guy (Now ‘Buddi’) doll into a glitchy, A.I. Disgruntled, the factory worker launches into a coding frenzy fit for a 1999 hacker who, using DOS, runs codes like “DISABLE VIOLENCE APPROXIMATORS” and “DISABLE SAFETY PROTOCOLS”. The 2019 premise: In an opening scene that looks like a Family Guy cutaway, an Asian man in a cartoonish bleak sweatshop is berated by his boss for nodding off at the production line.

As he lay dying, the serial killer transfers his soul into a Good Guys doll – a Cabbage Patch Kid crossbred with Bob the Builder and the hottest toy of 1988, apparently – with the use of a Haitian voodoo doll he acquired off-screen. They run into a toy store together where the killer is shot multiple times by the detective. The original Child’s Play had a unique if not absurd premise - a fugitive serial killer is on the run from an armed detective one dark and stormy night. Somehow less probable, definitely not scary. Child’s Play (2019) falls into the former category – it’s not good, guys.

On the other hand, plenty of movie remakes surprised us! The Ring (2002) has left a solid cultural footprint, The Fly (1986) is a classic, and even recent entries like It (2017) and Suspiria (2018) have managed to win critics over and blow away box office expectations.
